Wherein I Need To Write Something Because Writing Makes Me Feel Better

I’m stunned.

For more reasons than just the obvious one.

Sure, I am completely taken aback that a Trump presidency is actually going to happen. If I’m being totally honest, though, watching his path over the last year or more held way more cumulative surprises than this one big surprise. His rise has dumbfounded me and many others. The divide in this country is so much bigger than I knew.

Last night as I watched the results come in, I just felt shocked, numb, and sad. Today, I feel much the same.

What I don’t feel is hatred.

What I am stunned by is the reaction to this win.

I think all of us need to take a step back, take a deep breath, cry if you need to, scream if you need to, and then get back in the game. Now is not the time to spew hatred at anyone who voted for Trump. Now is not the time to throw your hands in the air and give up.

Now is the time to step up and be the people you claim to be.

It was easy to complain about Trump when he was a candidate. He gave us so much to complain about. It will probably be easy to continue to complain about President Trump (it hurt my fingers to type that).

The thing that will be more difficult, but oh so much more effective, is continuing to fight hate with love. Continuing to rise above. Continuing to be examples for our children.

A majority of our country has spoken. We need to examine why they felt the need to be heard in this way. We need to step outside of ourselves and LISTEN.

I had a sleepless night. I mostly worried about what to say to my children this morning. And here is what I have decided on…

I love you. Each of you. Deeply and without question. I’m going to be sad for a while. I think you are too and that’s okay. Know that we will continue to fight, that our family will continue to speak up when something isn’t right. Know that Mom and Dad will protect you. Know that you can and should, absolutely, without fear, continue to be exactly who you are without apology. The real truth lies in individual hearts and minds. Those can be won. You can continue to be the open minded, loving, confident people you are and your daily interactions will change hearts and minds. Because you are powerful. Never forget that. Love is power. Kindness is power. Wield it.
