Christmas Past, Christmas Present, Sibling Strength, Original Poetry

Brinkley and Jaten 2004

By: Brinkley Barney

I do believe love is a beautiful thing
I feel it everyday
It is ridiculous that you claim love can only be your way
As if love was restrained to something specific
What a horrible thing to say
And as you spit in the face of something so happy
It is impossible to keep my anger at bay
You do not get the only say
Don’t you see the soft smiles
Light hearts, laughing tongues
Dancing feet to love songs?
You roll your eyes in disgust
You call it disgraceful lust
Monsters, you shout, Evil
I simply have to say, that is not just
A thousand year old book determines my sister’s fate?
Something you so worship is filled with spewing words of hate
Do you not see the people you’re crushing with all that weight?
You fight against fundamental human rights
How does that fill you with holy light?
Did you have some vision, some sight?
Something that told you this was anything but absolutely right?
You don’t see their tears, because they hide them in the darkness of night
Afraid of your judgment
Your sick twisted judgment to which you hold no right
I want to scream, I want to fight
This is not love
A girl who cries and begs to the stars because she thinks she’s broken
Whose love for boys will never be woken
You tell her she can change, but when?
Why is her ability to desire another human such a sin?
And this poor girl, she’s started a war she will never win
Her desire to change, to be normal
Your desire to change her, your desire to make her “normal”
Is wrong and selfish
There is no fault in her
But there is fault in you
It’s in society too
I want my sister to be able to say “I do”
I don’t want it to be something you rue
This idea is old, it is not new
Please, understand, people deserve their shot at love
It shouldn’t matter if it does not come from the power above
Please don’t be the one that so rudely shoves
Or makes them pull on gloves
Marriage is not something they are unworthy of
They deserve more, they deserve trust
And I will never understand
When you cause so much trauma but claim to have no hand
Do it in the name of some godly man
Put so much energy in cruel ban
You’re losing, you know
I’m not the only one taking a stand
If your power is an hourglass, my friend,
You’re running out of sand
Because the love is here
And if you still choose not to see it
You’re a bigoted asshole, dear
And we all know your words are just masking your fear
That you might be wrong
So cause more pain
Mayhem and rain
Drown people with their own tears
Do it all in fear
Someday you’ll hear everything I said
I’m keeping a clear head
Boundaries on love are dead

“If you want to do really important things in life and big things in life, you can’t do anything by yourself. And your best teams are your friends and your siblings.”

You have beautiful children. Inside and out they exhibit love and hope and beauty and grace. You are doing so many great things with them–they are truly great human beings. I knew you would be a great mom and you are. And tell your kids that even though they don’t know who I am, I feel lucky to know them through you. They are AWESoME.

Alaska, thank you so much!! Your comment made me cry. Mostly because I admire you and your family so much. I love reading your Facebook posts and seeing all your activities, parties, and holidays. You are an amazing mother and so the compliment to me means so much coming from you. Thank you.
