The Month of August and Random Dinnertime Quotes (PG-13)

Now, I know I’m falling behind on blog posts these days. Forgive me, please? I started work and it’s been a crazy month. I had to work full-time during orientation, but now I’m down to my regular part-time schedule, so hopefully things will even out a bit for us. We still had plenty of fun this month, as evidenced by the pictures below. We did some hiking, some driving up really tall mountains, some birthday partying, and even attended a beer festival for good measure.

Estes

We went up to Estes Park and rode a tram up the mountain. Absolutely beautiful!

There was a strange peanut fight at the top of the mountain. I'm not sure exactly how it happened, but I will tell you this: Josh and Taye are ruthless. And the rest of us were like, "What's going on?"

Gray's

Josh, Jaten, and I did a popular hike called Grey Rock. We shared the trail and the summit with the whole University of Northern Colorado football team. They were noisy.

One of the larger football players tripped and nearly pushed me off the mountain. Surprisingly, it didn't even scare me. I just thought, "Oh crap, if I die, Josh is going to kill that poor kid."

We went downtown for the Tour de Fat, put on by Belgium Brewing and benefiting local bike charities. There were sooooo many costumed, drunk people. It was an entertaining afternoon.

The only complaint that I had, really, was that there were way too many immodestly dressed men in attendance. I mean, seriously, how can I keep my mind pure and the minds of my daughters pure when men are putting it all on display? It's like they're asking for trouble.

I mean, seriously, how can I keep my mind pure and the minds of my daughters pure when men are putting it all on display? It’s like they’re asking for trouble. Do they not understand the effect that they have on the opposite sex? Geez. They should take more responsibility for the thoughts that they cause women to have. (And if you don’t understand what I’m doing here, then you might consider that you are part of a serious problem. Maybe.)

We drove up Mount Evans outside of Denver. It's the highest paved road in North America, reaching over 14,000 feet. We dressed for cold weather and felt a little silly doing it as it was a balmy 80 degree day in Fort Collins.

However, it was 32 degrees (around zero degrees with wind chill) when we reached the top. We needed those coats!

Can you tell it's cold? Look at Taye's and Kye's faces. What are they doing? I am so worried about how we're going to handle our first Colorado winter.

Jaten and I climbed all the way to the top. We were hoping for a spectacular view, but it started snowing and we couldn't see a thing!

Moving on to the random quotes section of this post:

We have some interesting conversations around the dinner table in the Barney household. Since we have stepped away from religion one of the things that I have noticed (just being honest here) is that we have a lot more fun together. I’m not really in the mood to speculate about why that might be right now (though I have plenty of ideas). Here are some random quotes from around the dinner table for your reading pleasure:

“Well, while you’re at it, can you bump me up to 21?”

This quote comes from Brinkley. We were discussing the fact that students ride the Max (bus line) for free in Fort Collins. However, they have to show a student ID. This can be problematic for homeschooled students, so I just told her I would make an ID up for her.

“What would we do with a horse? We live in an apartment!”

This one was from our sweet little Kye. We were discussing the fact that when we were driving up to Estes Park we had seen a sign for “horse rentals.”

“We were just looking at each other and I swear I saw her eyes twinkle.”

Also from Kye. He has a little bit of a crush on a cute little girl (and apparently loves twinkly eyes).

“That’s what I was………………”

From Jaten. She has a girlfriend and she has an iphone and she texts A LOT. Sometimes mid sentence.

“Did you guys see that rock sheep?”

From Josh. I think he meant mountain goat.

“I think I’m becoming a rebel like Dad was when he was younger.”

From Kye. He was telling Jaten how he now eats as much ice cream as he wants and stays up late, too.

“I don’t know. It was something about saying yes a lot during sex.”

We like to discuss current events. This one was from Jaten. We had been discussing California’s new legislation regarding “yes means yes” vs. “no means no.”  (We were by no means making light of sexual assault. It is an exceptionally serious subject. Due to the subject’s serious nature, it took me a minute to realize what Jaten had said, but once I saw that Josh was shaking with laughter and turning red, I reevaluated what I had just heard and…that stuff is funny.)

So, that’s what’s been happening around here. Please stay tuned. I will try to write a little more often than once a month…

Until next time!!

Rock sheep! Lol. Love all your dinner conversations. :) Also, I love the picture of you and hubby in front of the bookshelf. You are beautiful, cousin.

Thank you so much, Melissa. Love those dinnertime conversations! Lots of laughter. Thanks for the compliment on the picture. Compliments are wonderful these days as I’m feeling my age (39 today). Yikes! Love you.
